Unconditional Love - Part 8

It had been a week since the unfortunate incident and Pierre had been trying in vain to contact Cathy. Having been informed by Doris of his blunder, he knew that he would have to work extra hard to win Cathy back. School was out for the year so waiting for her outside her school would be fruitless. He loitered around where she stayed, hoping to run into her but she didn't seem to be stepping out of her flat. He was so desperate to get in touch with Cathy that he even got Gary to assist him. Gary, though surprised to receive his call, was most willingly to extend a helping hand. He didn't bear a grudge against him as he understood Pierre's seemingly irrational behaviour as he reckoned that he would have reacted likewise if he were in the same situation.

Cathy had received numerous calls and messages not only from Pierre but also from her friends who were urging her to give Pierre another chance. Ever since the misunderstanding, she had had second thoughts about their relationship. She wasn't sure if she could endure another of his outburst which was not only getting more frequent but also more outrageous. It hurt to see him losing control of himself and engaging in violent acts. Perhaps, putting the relationship on hold would be better for both of them and hopefully it would stop him from tormenting himself and those around her. She decided to send him a message. She didn't want to face him or talk to him as she knew jolly well that she wouldn't be able to resist his pleads and would forgive him in no time.

"I'm sorry to have been avoiding you, I guess I just didn't know what I should do. Those times we spent together were some of the happiest and most memorable in my life. However, there were times when I felt bound by your numerous restrictions. I've have always believed in true love and true love to me should be unconditional. As such I've always treated you as my one and only but it saddened me to discover that you don't have much faith in our relationship and worst of all YOU DON'T TRUST ME. A relationship not built on a foundation of trust will not last and that being the case, it would be pointless to continue with our relationship. However, I hope that we could still remain as good friends. Take care."

Cathy didn't get a response to her message and much to her relief her friends had also stopped being pestered. It seemed that Pierre had accepted the fate of their relationship, maturely. Just as Cathy was recovering emotionally, she received a call from Gary. He alerted her to a particular news article on the day paper. Cathy, who didn't have the habit of reading the news, got hold of the paper and turned to the said page. The headline sent fear into her heart.

"Kayaker Drowned During Training"

Her heart started to race as she read the report. It was reported that a teenage kayaker, whom the police had identified as Pierre Kwan, was found underneath his capsized kayak. One of his teammates claimed that Pierre had wanted to stay in the water to continue to practise his flipping after they had called it a day. When they returned after their wash-up, they were surprised to see the overturned kayak. By the time they got to him, it was already too late. Ruling out foul play, the police were investigating if his death was accidental or suicidal.

It had been a long day for Cathy as she returned from the crematorium. Still in a state of disbelief, she suddenly decided to check out Pierre's blog. The last entry was made on the eve of his demise. Unlike his usual style, the final entry was written in quotations, as if he was pouring out whatever that came to mind.

"I hate to see the one I love happy with somebody but I surely hate it more to see the one I love unhappy with me."

"A million words would not bring you back, I know because I've tried. Neither would a million tears, I know because I've cried."

"If I have not known you, I wouldn't have lived. If I die with out knowing you, I wouldn't have died because I didn't live at all."

"I love you with all of my heart, body and soul. You complete me. You make my life worth living. To have known you and to have loved you has been the most beautiful dream. I can only hope that I never wake up."

Cathy's vision gradually blurred as she read. She began to ask herself if she had been too harsh to him. Would things have turned out differently if she had answered his calls? Then it occurred to her that her demand for an unconditioned love was in itself a condition. What a tragic irony. As she listened to the song being played, she felt her face being touched and it felt just like how her dear Pierre used to caress her. However, instead of freaking out, she sat very still as she didn't want to lose the sensation. She wanted the moment to freeze then and there. She wanted the moment to go into eternity. She wanted the moment to ......................
